Guide to Driving to Malaysia in 2024: VEP, RFID tag and Touch 'n Go
Taking a quick weekend getaway to Johor Bahru? Or having a long vacation further up in Kuala Lumpur or Penang? If you are driving into Malaysia, you will need a few things: Touch 'n Go, Vehicle Entry Permit and RFID tag.
1. Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP)
From October 1 2024, all Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia are required to have a valid VEP. If you do not have a VEP, you may not be allowed to enter Malaysia and face penalties.
How to obtain a VEP?
Head to Road Transport Department Malaysia’s website (https://vep.jpj.gov.my/) to apply online. You will need your NRIC, passport, vehicle road tax, insurance, model and Certificate of Entitlement (COE) for the application. You can get your vehicle log card from Land Transport Authority’s OneMotoring website (https://vrl.lta.gov.sg/). After registering successfully, you will receive a confirmation email.
2. RFID Tag
The VEP-RFID tag is a small sticker unique to each
registered vehicle to attach to your vehicle's headlamp.
It can be used to pay for road charges when you enter
Malaysia and toll charges at expressways in Malaysia.
You will need to pay a processing fee of MYR10 for the
RFID tag which will be valid for 5 years.
You can opt for either self-collection at a VEP counter
in Johor Bahru, Woodlands in Singapore or home delivery
to your address in Malaysia or Singapore. For delivery
to Singapore, you will need to pay a service fee of
MYR30 and postage fee of MYR15. Sales and services tax
apply too.
3. Touch 'n Go Wallet
What is the Touch 'n Go Wallet?
The Touch 'n Go Wallet is a digital wallet used
extensively in Malaysia's payment landscape and often
used for paying tolls, parking, and other services. It
is an essential app to download as it can be linked to
your assigned VEP-RFID tag and automate your toll
payments when you drive across the causeway.
Let’s say you are driving to Kuala Lumpur from
Singapore. You will need to pay a toll charge of about
MYR72 to MYR78 (roughly SGD22 to SGD24) for a round
trip. Including petrol, a round trip can cost around
MYR200 (roughly SGD61). You can also use the Touch ‘n Go
eWallet to pay for services like a car wash and other
expenses like food and shopping. Once all expenses are
summed up, you will need at least SGD200 for a road
trip. Topping up your Touch ‘n Go eWallet with Singtel
Dash gives you a more favourable SGD-MYR exchange rate
compared to credit cards. What’s more, you can transfer
in real-time with Dash.
